Reframing Literacy in the Discipline of Science with the Disciplinary Literacy Observation Tool (DLOT)

This article explains how teams of special educators, science teachers, literacy consultants, and administrators can use the Disciplinary Literacy Observation Tool (DLOT) accompanying planning tool to improve disciplinary instruction in inclusive secondary classrooms. The DLOT was developed partnership with practitioners as a for professional development coaching. First, tool's five dimensions are described: (a) aspects science, (b) instructional grouping, (c) student engagement, (d) quality pedagogy, (e) overall quality. Then, an illustration is provided educators collaborate other colleagues identify, document, reflect upon, set goals regarding ways that benefit students learning disabilities. With DLOT, approach integration address both general discipline-specific strategies aligned synergistically Common Core State Standards Next Generation Science through three-dimensional learning.
